Julie Walker was born in the North East of England not far from the Angel of the North. A music fan from an early age, she first came across the story of Anne Bonny and Mary Read in the Adam and the Ants song ‘Five Guns West’ from the album ‘Prince Charming’, and it started a lifelong obsession with the women’s story.

She was accepted onto one of the first Curtis Brown Creative courses back in 2012 where she worked on an early version of the book. It was longlisted for the Mslexia Novel Award back in 2012. Having reworked the novel again from scratch, it was longlisted for the Bath Novel Award in 2020, and will be published 2 August 2022. It is her debut novel.

She lives in north London with her husband and cat.
